Taking Le Tiss

The fascinating, insightful and at times hilarious memoirs of one of the most gifted and enigmatic British footballers of the last 25 years. Nicknamed "Le God" by the Southampton faithful, Matt Le Tissier was not cast from the same mould as 99% of other professional footballers. A real "one-off" if every there was one, he was a one-club man in a 16-year career that brought little in the way of trophies but countless plaudits from footballs fans and commentators alike. To the old school brigade he was a "luxury player", someone with a less than ideal work rate and waistline who simply wouldn't conform to the blueprint of a typically hard-working, unsophisticated British player. Terry Venables and Glenn Hoddle found it all too easy to leave him out of their England squads. But to the vast majority Le Tissier was a maverick to be treasured, a flair player who lit up every match he played in and delighted fans with his sumptuous technique and elan for the beautiful game. In fact, the kind of skilful, inventive player and scorer of wonderful goals this country produces all too rarely. Did he simply enjoy the comfort zone of being a big fish in a small pond? Or did he display commendable loyalty in staying with Southampton for his entire career? Did he shun opportunities to move on? Were England managers right not to pick him so many times? Would Fabio Capello pick him for England now? Does the British game discourage his style of play? And how much would he be worth in today's transfer market? Taking Le Tiss is the great man's first chance to answer all these questions and many more. It is also a delightfully self-deprecating and witty story from a player who was more of a Big-Mac-and-fries than a chicken-and-beans man.

Taking Chances: Winning with Probability

Most of us enjoy pleasant surprises and know that many of life's greatest rewards are obtained by taking chances. This is true whether we are playing the National Lottery or deciding whether or not to buy flowers when we are unsure if it might be our girlfriend's birthday. So if you enjoy taking chances, and winning--and it's a safe bet that you do--this book helps you do so in a more intelligent way.

John Haigh is Reader in Mathematics at Sussex University and his book covers a remarkably large number of topics. He tells you how to take chances playing the football pools and about the role of chance in sports such as tennis, golf, cricket and soccer. What points in tennis are most important? If a footballer gets a yellow card in 10 percent of games and is suspended for one game whenever he has accumulated two yellow cards, how often is he suspended? What is the chance that a team that scores the first goal goes on to win? He also writes about casino games, bridge and Monopoly, explaining why orange is the best colour of Monopoly property to own.

The book is practical rather than theoretical. It is written for anyone with a curious mind, aged perhaps 16 and up. It is not a textbook, but introduces concepts, such as random walk and game theory, that are familiar to professional mathematicians. There are technical appendices and test-yourself-quizzes for readers who want to explore more. A bonus is advice on the National Lotteries. Haig will help you choose UK National Lottery numbers that are more likely to give you a large prize. However, with typical vividness, he cautions that if the Lottery had begun with the ancient druids, and your ancestors had bought 50 tickets every week for the last 5000 years, then by now your family could expect to have won the jackpot just once! --Richard Weber --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

What are the odds against winning the Lottery, making money in a casino, or backing the right horse? Every day, people make judgements on these matters and face other decisions that rest on their understanding of probability: buying insurance, following medical advice, carrying an umbrella. Yet many of us have a frightening ignorance of how probability works. Taking Chances presents an entertaining and fascinating exploration of probability, revealing traps and fallacies in the field. It describes and analyses a remarkable variety of situations where chance plays a role, including football pools, the Lottery, TV games, sport, cards, roulette, coins, and dice. The book guides the reader round common pitfalls, demonstrates how to make better informed decisions, and shows where the odds can be unexpectedly in your favour. This new edition has been fully updated, and includes information on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire?" and "The Weakest Link", plus a new chapter on Probability for Lawyers.

Mastering Betfair

Trading the Betfair sporting markets in-play is rapidly growing in popularity thanks to the increased sporting coverage available on many different satellite and cable channels. Enthusiasm for sport is a must, but there is much more to mastering Betfair. Many people start by just using Betfair to obtain better odds than those available at the traditional bookmakers. They then perhaps do a little more research and learn to trade the markets. But to make a regular profit to win and keep on winning a serious, disciplined approach and careful planning need to be employed. Mastering Betfair takes the reader through many low-risk strategies developed by the author over the past three years, showing how you too can benefit from these approaches to the betting exchanges. It also explains in detail why and how the Betfair user should employ disciplines such as managing risk that are normally associated with trading the financial markets. Indeed, through doing this it is hoped that the book will draw the attention of financial traders to the unique opportunities available on Betfair. This book is essential reading for anyone looking to take their Betfair trading to another level and start making some serious money.

Pete Nordsted has been an administrator/statistician in the Royal Air Force since 1985. He was introduced to Betfair whilst on detachment in of all places Afghanistan. Despite the various connection problems he soon realised the opportunities offered by the betting exchanges and has studied the Betfair markets in depth since 2005. He is a also a Betfair accredited trainer and the head of tradeonsports.co.uk a service which analyses the market and back tests various systems and strategies.

Review

A fascinating insight into the mind of someone whose brain ticks a whole lot quicker and more precisely than most --John Francome

Patrick has one of the sharpest minds in racing. His book gives a fascinating insight into the discipline of punting --William Haggas, Derby-winning trainer

The mega gamble was orchestrated by Patrick Veitch, one of the shrewdest and most organised gamblers in the country ... Timing his strike with military precision, Veitch crept under the radar --Sunday Times

Product Description

Enemy Number One is the sensational inside story of Patrick Veitch, the UK's most feared professional punter, and how he overcame adversity to take the bookmakers for more than £10 million over an eight-year period.

Enemy Number One offers an often controversial but utterly fascinating insight into Veitch's life of punting. For anyone who likes the occasional bet or who takes gambling seriously and has both the 'brain surgeon' and 'mad axeman' capabilities to do it there is more to be gleaned from this book than probably any other betting book.

Veitch is no ordinary punter. Enemy Number One documents an eight-year period of profits in excess of £10 million. It also chronicles the tactical headaches of placing bets with the bookmakers using Veitch's vast network of agents and sub-agents.

Veitch has had no comfortable ride, though. Just a short while after becoming a full-time punter he was the victim of an extortion attempt by a dangerous criminal who was subsequently tried twice for murder and later convicted of attempted murder. Veitch was forced to flee and go into hiding, returning to Cambridge to testify in a bulletproof jacket with police protection.

With the criminal behind bars, Veitch, in dire financial straits, resolved to take on the bookmakers in his comeback year on a greater scale than ever before. Enemy Number One details his role as the man behind the famous Exponential coup, winning the Scoop6 and his success as an owner/punter. He describes his Fundamental Principle of Betting Theory to explain why the approach of most punters is fatally flawed and details the approach that is needed in order to succeed. He also provides in-depth coverage of a full day in his work as a professional punter.

Told in Veitch's own candid ice-cool style, with an intelligent wit throughout, this is quite simply a compelling read.

Twitter Power 2.0: How to Dominate Your Market One Tweet at a Time

The best guide to using Twitter to market to consumers–revised and better than ever

Since 2006, forward–thinking companies like Apple, JetBlue, Whole Food, and GM have discovered the instant benefits of leveraging social media site Twitter to reach consumers directly, build their brand, and increase their sales. Some companies have whole teams of specialists whose only job is to respond to the tweets of consumers.

In this revised and updated edition of Twitter Power, online marketing guru Joel Comm explores the latest trends in how businesses and marketers can integrate Twitter into their existing marketing strategies to build a loyal following among Twitter members, expand awareness of their product or service, and even handle negative publicity due to angry or disappointed customers.

  • Updated with thirty percent new material, including all the latest business applications for Twitter
  • Includes new, recent case studies of companies at the forefront of the Twitter movement
  • Helps you develop your own social networking strategy to meet your specific business needs

Twitter Power is a must–have resource for any business leader who wants to keep up with the social media movement.

Given that Twitter is a 140 character micro blog, you would be forgiven for wondering why you need a book to be able to make the most of it.

However, Joel Comm's book provides real insight for the virgin twitterer who plans to use Twitter as a marketing tool for business. He fully explores all the built in Twitter features and shows you everything from maxing your Twitter appearance to keeping your tweets on the right side of libel!

He also explores the profusion of applications created to help you make the most of Twitter. However, bear in mind that the app list will have been superceded almost as soon as the ink dried on the printed page. I'd advise checking out the current selection of apps IN ADDITION to those outlined in the book.

Good book - absolutely worth the money if you plan to use Twitter in a business capacity. Not heavy on the jargon - I found it easy to read and I'm not a techie minded person at all.

Unfortunately, the whole business world is switching on to Twitter and it is increasingly being used in this way - which gets a bit annoying for everyone else on there who doesn't want a marketing man selling them anything. Read the etiquette section carefully so that you don't end up annoying people.
