Manchester United fans welcomed back Wayne Rooney after a 34-day absence, with most chanting his name as if he had never been away.

Fears that a slimline Rooney had lost the support of the Stretford End disappeared when he received a big ovation merely for warming up after being named as a substitute.

And when he came on in the 56th minute, cries of ‘Roo-ney, Roo-ney’ reverberated around the stadium, drowning out a few dissenting boos.
